Ways to Support

While Philadelphia’s Chinatown now appears to be much different than it was in its segregated origins, the fight for survival is never-ending. With persistent urban redevelopment proposals, post-pandemic recovery, and increasing anti-Asian sentiments across the United States, Chinatown businesses need the support of its customers more than ever before. Fortunately, there are many ways you can help to preserve the rich, vibrant community that stands before Philadelphia today:

1. Donate to the PCDC and other AAPI-based non-profit organizations.

The Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation works directly to preserve and protect Chinatown as a “viable ethnic, residential, and business community” through a variety of programs and via the provision of services to the residents/businesses established. Services such as providing more affordable housing, small business assistance, youth and family support services, and neighborhood planning are made possible with the help of the PCDC, allowing for the Chinatown you see today. Donating to the PCDC is a direct way of helping to continue the support for these services, which are particularly pertinent as businesses continue to struggle in recovery post-pandemic. Donate here and learn more ways to support as well.

2. Volunteer and speak up against zoning matters.

Every year, new proposals are made to tear down and replace spaces presently dominated by Chinatown businesses and residencies. Help to speak up against zoning policies that matter and become a voice within the Chinatown community by attending Zoning Board hearings or encouraging residents and businesses to partake as well. The PCDC posts about regular hearing dates and times in its newsletter here.

3. Continue to eat, shop, and visit local Chinatown businesses.

For those who reside near Philadelphia or are planning to visit, one of the best ways to support is to simply visit the businesses and enjoy all that Chinatown has to offer! From exquisite cuisines to one-of-a-kind arts experiences at the Asian Arts Initiative, there is something for every one to enjoy.
